Federal fugitive captured Saturday in Conetoe

TARBORO — A federal fugitive who was at the center of a manhunt most of the day Friday in Conetoe, was found around 11:30 a.m. Saturday and taken into custody after authorities received information on his whereabouts.

According to reports, while investigating a break-in in the Conetoe area, the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office learned that their prime suspect, 38-year-old Christopher Deon Powell, was also wanted by the U.S. Marshal Service.

Powell, who is from the Washington, D.C. area, was staying in the Conetoe area and was spotted there Friday. He tried to evade the capture by the marshals by hiding out in the area.

According to Sheriff James Knight, as deputies tried to stop the vehicle that Powell was in, he jumped out and took off on foot and was able to elude immediate capture.

The sheriff's office surrounded the area and called in K9's, Highway Patrol and U.S. Marshals, who were in the area to come and help search for the suspect and later that afternoon, there was a helicopter seen in the area assisting in the search.

During the search, the sheriff's office issued a "Code Red" for residents on Highway 42 in the Conetoe area were told to stay inside and keep their doors to their homes and vehicles locked, which caused citizens to become alarmed.

The search for Powell lasted the majority of the afternoon and into the night, but the result of the early search was unsuccessful.

To help try and locate the suspect, law enforcement sent out a press release to multiple media outlets Friday evening to let citizens in the area know that if they see Powell they needed to contact the sheriff's office.

At approximately 10:53 a.m. Saturday, the sheriff's office received information that Powell was still in the Conetoe area at a residence on Burnette Farm Road. Upon arrival, the deputies were able to take Powell into custody without incident. He was being released to the U.S. Marshals.
