TARBORO — Edgecombe County Board of Election director Jerry Spruell has a question he would like to ask Edgecombe County residents: "Have you registered to vote?"

Spruell is encouraging all persons not registered to vote to do so before the deadline 5 p.m. Friday. If that deadline is missed, citizens can register at one of the One Stop voting sites in the county.

Citizens who have never been registered, changed their addresses or have committed felonies and have satisfied the conditions of the felony voting law, are encouraged to register in order to be able to participate in the Nov. 6 General Election.

Citizens who miss the deadline can register at One Stop and vote, however they will not be able to vote on Nov. 6.

Voters registration is wrapping up in preparation for the early voting that will kick off a week from today and run through Saturday, Nov. 3. One Stop sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The sites are located in the Edgecombe County Administration Building, 201 St. Andrews Street, Nash-Rocky Mount Board of Education Administration Building, 800 Fairview Road, Rocky Mount, Edgecombe County Memorial Library Pinetops Branch, 201 South 1st Street, Pinetops and M.C. Braswell Cultural Educational Development Center, 649 Morning Start Church Road. Battlesboro.

In recent years, One Stop voting has become popular, especially during General Elections. In the 2008 General election, 19,000 out of the 29,000 registered voters in Edgecombe County voted One Stop.

"I encourage all citizens to take advantage of the One Stop voting," Spruell said. "It's a good thing to do just in case it rains on election day or some unforeseeable incident occurs."

Spruell pointed out that voters who vote a straight party ticket must also mark a box of their choice for the president and non-partisan offices, such as those for judges. The local sales and use tax must also be marked separately.

Edgecombe has 38,491 registered voters including 28,617 Democrats, 6,059 Republicans, 3,781 unaffiliated and 34 Libertarians.
