Additional charges filed in peeping Tom case

TARBORO — Additional charges have been filed against the former employee of B&G Fitness who is alleged to have secretly videotaped customers while they were in a tanning bed at the establishment.

Gary Owens, 29, was initially charged with four counts of felony secret peeping April 19 after a customer alerted authorities that video equipment was in the tanning room. Edgecombe County Sheriff's Department investigators found evidence to charge Owens on the  four counts. He was placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $100,000 bond. Owens appeared in court on May 8 for a hearing where a judge reduced his bond to $20,000.

The suspect was placed back in jail. Soon afterward, Owens was charged with 10 additional felony secret peeping charges plus a felony possession of schedule III control substance, misdemeanor possess drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer.

He was summoned back to court on May 9 where a judge set an additional $60,000 bond.

Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight said the additional felony peeping charges stem from information that was taken from a "chip." During the initial investigation, Owens allegedly attempted to conceal information from the investigators which led to the resisting public officer charge. Knight said drugs were found in Owen's locker at B&G which led to the drug charges.

Owens is scheduled to appear in court May 24 for his first appearance on the new charges.

Knight said more charges are pending.
