Scouts coming for Tar River Challenge

TARBORO — Today and Saturday, for the fifth consecutive year, Tarboro will host the Tar River District’s annual Tar River Challenge Cub Scout event at Indian Lake Park.

Today, Scouts and their families have a chance to begin setting up camp as early as 3 p.m. before enjoying an evening around the campfire and a night of camping. Overnight camping for the Scouts will also be allowed Saturday night.

On Saturday, the day will be filled with various Scouting activities, including BB, archery, sling shot, row boating, fishing, crafts, nature hike and treasure hunt, basketball, table tennis, skateboarding, kickball, obstacle course and bicycling. Cub Scouts will choose which activities they will participate in.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, followed by the events from 9:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The Cub Scout program is for boys in grades 1-5, or between the ages of 7 and 10. It is a program of the Boy Scouts of America.

There are several Tarboro/Edgecombe County units which will be helping host the Challenge, including Pack/Troop 49 of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pack 96 of St. James United Methodist Church, Pack 1045 of St. James Temple Church, Pack/Troop 816 of First Free Will Baptist Church and Pack 961 of Pinetops.
