TARBORO — Vidant Edgecombe Hospital’s staff celebrated New Year’s Day with the birth of three babies.

“It’s usually one, if that many [born on New Year’s.] We’ll remember it,” said the hospital’s nurse manager Ernie Glover.

The first baby, De’Andrey Sheron Wallace, was born at 5:35 a.m. and weighed 7 pounds, 13.6 ounces.

“I felt like the Lord felt like I needed an angel beside me,” said De’Andrey’s mother, Shireke Spruill, of Martin County. “It must’ve been a blessing.”

“She chccked in on the 31st. Comments were made about how exciting it would be for her baby to be the first baby of the new year,” said Jamilyn Burnett, the nurse who admitted Spruill. “When staff arrived the next morning, they were excited to see that her baby was the first born in 2013. All staff has enjoyed taking care of her new baby and family.”

“I was shocked. I was stunned. I couldn’t believe it,” said De’Andrey’s father, Andy Wallace, when he found out De’Andrey was going to be born on New Year’s.

“My mother-in-law [Simone Wallace] has been telling me from day one it was going to be a New Year’s baby,” Spruill said.

De’Andrey wasn’t due until Jan. 30. The baby was premature and had some breathing complications, but “he’s pulling through now,” said Spruill.

Two of De’Andrey’s uncles, Jessie Whitaker and Mark Lopez, wanted the baby to be born on their birthday – Jan. 7 and Jan. 28, respectively. But the baby’s aunt, Patricia Dupree, was excited De’Andrey was a New Year’s baby.

“We’re glad the baby is here,” she said. De’Andrey’s brother, 11-year-old Darion Wallace, also was excited about his baby brother’s arrival.

“He always wanted a brother, so now he’s got one,” Spruill said. “Darion was born on Memorial Day, May 28th … I have lucky babies.”

The second baby born at the hospital in 2013 was Landon Mitchum, who arrived at 7:45 a.m. and weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces. He is the son of Heidi and William Mitchum of Tarboro and the grandson of Al and Rose Holloman of Pinetops.

“He was due Christmas Eve,” William said. “He was already a week late and we couldn’t wait.”

William said Landon’s brother Chandler, 7, and sister Kaylie, 5, kept asking, “When’s the baby coming?”

While Heidi said she had hoped Landon would be the first to be born on New Year’s at the hospital, she’s happy to have a New Year’s baby.

The third baby of the New Year, Kinsley Aaliyah Roberson, was born at 6:51 p.m. and weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces. She was due Jan. 9.

“I wasn’t expecting her to be New Year’s Day, maybe Jan. 5,” said Aaliyah’s mother, Karen Denise Roberson, of Tarboro. “We’ll never forget her birthday.”

Roberson is married to Mario Roberson and the two have three other daughters – Kykira Roberson, 10, Carmen Roberson 6, and Zoie Roberson, 16 months.
