TARBORO — The ability to grow business and industry with a minimal impact on the environment will be the focus of “Sustainability in Manufacturing,” an educational and networking event scheduled for May 1 at Nomaco, 3006 Anaconda Road, Tarboro.

The Department of Commerce’s Sustainable Manufacturing Initiative defines sustainable manufacturing as “the creation of manufactured products that use processes that minimize negative environmental impacts, conserve energy and natural resources, are safe for employees, communities, and consumers and are economically sound.”

The gathering will allow Eastern North Carolina businesses to gather more information regarding sustainability and share examples of their efforts. The afternoon will include presentations by sustainability experts, sharing of best practices, and a plant tour.

"We are excited about this event for the Twin Counties and Eastern North Carolina," said John Gessaman, president of Carolinas Gateway Partnership (CGP). "Nomaco and SIS shared their sustainability successes at a Zebulon event in January and CGP, the local chambers of commerce and many others felt this was important to share locally as well.  The Sustainability in Manufacturing event will highlight sustainable solutions for local manufacturers and industries in this area and provide an opportunity to see real-world examples in action."

Sustainability programs are under way at a number of area businesses. Last month, Keihin Carolina System Technology (KCST) was recognized as a partner in the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources Environmental Stewardship Initiative at a meeting in Raleigh.

KCST’s John Foster told the group about the plant’s sustainability program, saying, “This has been a learning experience. It is not so much about should you do it. It is that you can’t afford not to do it. I encourage everyone to take action.”

The May 1 session is being hosted by Hosted by Nomaco and Sustainable Industrial Solutions (SIS) and sponsored by Carolinas Gateway Partnership, Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce and Tarboro Edgecombe Chamber of Commerce. It will get under way at 2 p.m. and is free and open to the business community, although registration is required by April 19.
