Election results to be canvassed

TARBORO — Results from last week’s primary election will be canvassed and certified Tuesday, according to Edgecombe County Board of Elections Director Jerry Spruell.

About 32 percent of registered voters — slightly less than the statewide average of 34 percent — cast ballots in Edgecombe County. Spruell said he was pleased with the countywide turnout,

Spruell said the election was largely uneventful with the exception of complaints being filed regarding two men asking voters for personal information — names and addresses — near the voting location at D.S. Johnson Elementary School in Rocky Mount..

Spruell said he had contact with the men and advised them to stop. While receiving no additional reports, Spruell said he was told the next day of a similar incident that had happened near the school.

In that incident, the men were queried and said the were poll workers and were directing voters, The voter said he went inside the voting precinct and reported the incident, prompting real poll workers to go outside and send the men away.
