A 44-year-old Edgecombe County man, Troy Edmondson of 49 Clark St. in Tarboro, made his first court appearance today in district court in connection with charges he sexually assaulted a 6-year-old girl.
Edgecombe County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call on Sunday in reference to the incident. After beginning their investigation, deputies learned Edmondson was the suspect. After further investigation, deputies determined they had enough evidence to arrest and charge Edmondson with indecent liberties with a child and first-degree sexual offense with a child. Edmondson was placed in the Edgecombe County Detention Center under a $10,000 secured bond.
Taking indecent liberties with a child is a Class F felony in North Carolina and is punishable by 13-16 months in prison.
The charge of taking indecent liberties with a child is described by law as someone who willfully takes or attempts to take any immoral, improper, or indecent liberties with any child of either sex under the age of 16 years old for the purpose of arousing or gratifying sexual desire or someone who willfully commits or attempts to commit any lewd or lascivious act upon or with the body or any part or member of the body of a child of either sex.
The first-degree sexual offense is a Class B1 felony and is punishable by 192-240 months in prison.
The charge of first-degree sexual offense is described by law as a person who engages in a sexual act with a victim who is a child under the age of 13 years old and the defendant is at least 12 years old or is at least four years older than the victim; or with another person by force and against the will of the other person.
