TARBORO — The Edgecombe County Board of Education at its Monday evening meeting unanimously voted to make changes to the 2013-2014 school calendar.

“All in all, we’re talking about four and a half additional days that we’ll add on,” Edgecombe County Public Schools Superintendent John Farrelly said.

The school system has had nine missed school days this year due to inclement weather.

Even with the missed days, ECPS is still projecting to be “significantly over the instructional hours requirement,” according to information provided to the board.

A portion of a new law, Senate Bill 187, Section 78.11, gives school districts flexibility to have 185 school days or meet the requirement of 1.025 hours of instruction.

Two of the additional makeup days are the last two days of spring break, April 24 and 25. That leaves students with three days for spring break instead of five. Superintendent John Farrelly said he chose those two days as makeup days because he reasoned that families planning to take a vacation during spring break would be likely to begin a vacation the weekend prior to the break.

March 3, May 26 (Memorial Day) and June 13 are the other student makeup days. In the original calendar, June 12 was the last day for students, while May 26 was a holiday, and March 3 was an early release day for students, with mandatory professional development for staff in the afternoon.
