Couple who met online celebrate lasting love

TARBORO — Traditional dating didn't bring Joe and Denise Taylor, both 47, to become husband and wife. Living 1,000 miles apart, the couple met online in a Yahoo chat room in May 1999.

On Thursday, Joe said the day they met “seems like yesterday.”

This Valentine’s Day, the Tarboro couple will celebrate 14 years of marriage with their three children – Joseph Casey, 11, Logan Ryan, 9, and Elizabeth Lauren, 6.

When the couple met, Denise was living in Grayling, Mich. and Joe was in Tarboro.

“One thousand miles away. Almost in another time zone,” said Joe. “I tell everybody I bought her on ebay and they won’t take her back. They say I kept her too long."

Denise said people are surprised when they find out she and Joe met online. The 1,000- mile journey started on Mother's Day. Instead of celebrating the holiday, the Michigan native mourned the death of her mother.

She logged into the Yahoo chat room to reconnect with cousins with whom she hadn’t talked in a while. She wasn’t looking for love. She was reaching out for condolences from her family.

On the other end of the spectrum, the woman that Joe was planning to marry died a week before their wedding. Somehow Joe joined in on Denise's family Yahoo chat and struck up a conversation with his bride to be.
