Local thief caught after intense investigation

TARBORO — The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office received a break in a nearly 18-month investigation where numerous vehicles and residences were broken into in a neighborhood off N.C. 33 NW.

The detectives working the case were able to charge the suspect with 45 various crimes related to the incidents after investigations and interviews led them to 23-year-old Prentice Williams.

Sheriff James Knight gave the detectives working the case praise Wednesday for their diligent work and not letting the case go cold.

"I want to thank my detectives for not giving up on the case when it looked as if they wouldn't solve it," Knight said. "I like the way they continued to work the case until a break came through."

The thefts began in September 2012, and the last one reported was in January. The detectives had some help solving the case when they used photographic surveillance footage to identify Williams.

Williams allegedly broke into vehicles and homes in the Jerry's Village and The Meadows Mobile Home Park area and stole flat screen televisions, gaming systems, assorted jewelry and other household electronics.
