Registration for Edgecombe County’s first “global school,” Martin Millennium Academy (MMA), begins today and ends March 15.
MMA is a proposed K-8 school scheduled to offer dual language immersion (Spanish) program to kindergarten students and globally themed instruction to all students. The school is set to open on the current campus of C.B. Martin Middle School at 400 E. Johnston St. in August. ECPS is partnering with VIF International Education, a corporation headquartered in Chapel Hill that builds global education programs, to open the school. VIF will recruit teachers from all over the world to teach at Martin Millennium Academy, and ECPS will pair a traditional teacher with a “global” teacher at each grade level.
“Our overall goal is to provide students with an outstanding education,” Farrelly said. “This is the way of the future. Teaching students to have a global perspective is going to prepare them to be more successful…This is a different approach that we think is going to be very successful.”
Farrelly told the board he plans to have three classes at each grade level at the school, with about 20 students in each class. That would mean the school would have about 540 students.
