Sheriff's Office investigating Princeville shooting

TARBORO — The Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday night at Pioneer Court Apartments in Princeville.

According to a press release issued by the sheriff's office, the Princeville Police Department initially responded to the call, but later turned the investigation over to the sheriff's office's detectives division since they are currently short-staffed currently and don't have any investigators within the police department.

According to Sheriff James Knight, detectives have a person of interest who they have questioned regarding the case and are moving forward at a rapid pace.

"I am pleased with the progress we have made in the case," Knight said. "The investigation is moving forward and we are hoping to wrap it up by the end of the week. We can't release too many details because of what stage of the investigation is at."

According to witnesses at the apartment complex, who didn't want to be named, said that a fight broke out before the gun shots rang out.
