May primary filing opens today

TARBORO — Filing for the May Primary began noon today and will run until noon Feb. 28. across the state. In Edgecombe County, candidates can file for 17 seats.

In Edgecombe, the seat that has garnered the most interest is the District 23 seat in the NC House, currently held by Joe Tolson. Tolson, a nine-term Democrat,  has announced he will not seek reelection. Since that time, Tarboro Town Councilman Taro Knight, and Edgecombe Board of Election member, Shelly Willingham have expressed their interest in the seat but neither made a 100 percent commitment for running. Rumors have at least two other candidates, including Rocky Mount attorney William Solomon, who may may file. Solomon lost to Tolson in the most recent election for the seat.

Another candidate likely to file for is Allen Dennie. Dennie, a former Edgecombe County auxiliary deputy, announced several months ago that he will run for Sheriff. Incumbent Sheriff James Knight has not announced publicy whether he will seek reelection.

The 7th District will be filling two District Court Judge seats currently being held by Joseph J. Harper and Pell Carlton Cooper. A prominent Edgecombe County attorney, Wayne Boyette, has expressed interest in one of the seats.

Four seats will be on the ballot for Edgecombe County Board of Education— Districts 1, 3, 5, and 7. Perhaps the most interesting could be District 7, which is currently being held by Faye Taylor. Taylor turned in a letter of resignation last month and will step down tonight when the board appoints her successor. John Edmondson Jr., a former member of the board, and Marva Scott, director of the Edgecombe County Department of Social Service, are nominees for the appointment. Even with the board appointment, the seat will still be up for election.
