Local high school results from Monday’s sports action

WILSON — The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars golf team has picked up right where they left off last season, beating teams handily. The Cougars hosted the Fike Demons Monday at Maccripine Country Club and defeated them by 28 strokes, 312-340.

SouthWest had three players shot 77. Nate Webb, Cole Jefferys and Eric Norville led the way for the Cougars on a cold windy day. Those three had the top score of the match. Taylor Newton added an 81 and Ryan Chatt chipped in an 82 for the Cougars.

First-year head coach Jonathan Cobb said he was pleased with his teams overall performance, because they battled in tough conditions.

"It's been cold lately and Maccripine had tough pin placements for us Monday," Cobb said. "I think we are all ready for warmer matches, but it is nice to see all my guys contributing so early in the season."

The Cougars have five golfers who could finish first on any given day, according to Cobb. He said he is looking forward to watching them improve as they continue the season.

SouthWest will have another match Thursday when they travel to Southern Wayne Country Club. They will compete against Beddingfield, Hunt and Southern Wayne. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Fike 6 SouthWest 3

The SouthWest Edgecombe Cougars tennis team didn't fair to well Monday when they hosted the Nash Central Bulldogs. The Bulldogs defeated the Cougars 6-3.

The Cougars fifth seed player, Tyler Joyner, won the only singles match for them. He defeated Chandler Johnson 10-5.

The Cougars also got wins from their first and third seeded doubles team. The first seeded doubles team won 6-4 and the third seed won 7-6 after winning a tie breaker set 10-8.

SouthWest's No. 1 seeded player Alexander Derby lost his match 7-10 and the second seed Mark McKenzie lost his match 9-11.

Cougars head coach Joel Elliott was impressed that his team continues to show constant improvement everyday they take the court.

"We did well in some close games against a very good Nash Central team," Elliott said. "If we show constant improvement from this starting point we will do well this season."

The Cougars are back in action Thursday when they host the Greene Central Rams in Eastern Plains Conference action.
