Norville finishes in middle of state pack

TARBORO — Tarboro Viking cross country runner Kaylyn Norville qualified to run in Saturday's NCHSAA 1-A state finals meet in Kernersville at Ivey Redmond Sports Complex.

Norville finished seventh in the regionals a week ago in Manteo, which qualified her, but Saturday she wasn't able to keep up with the front of the pack in the race.  Out of 125 runners, Norville finished in 61st place with a time of 22:51.09, which was three minutes and 46 seconds slower than the winner, Malia Ellington, who finished with a time of 19:05.13.

Kernersville Bishop McGuinness, running close to home, successfully defended both its men’s and women’s team titles in Saturday's race.

The men’s 1-A team race was extremely tight, with only eight points separating the top three teams. Bishop recorded 90 points in the men’s standings to 95 for Research Triangle and 98 for Elkin.

Zach Boone of Mitchell was the individual 1-A champion, winning in a time of 15:51.84, almost 22 seconds ahead of Chris O’Brien of Raleigh Charter.
