Viking netters forge tie for league lead

TARBORO — Tarboro netters put their coach and fans on the edge of the their seats Tuesday when they redeemed themselves against Two Rivers Conference opponent Riverside. Tarboro went into the final doubles match knowing they needed that win to secure a share of first place in the conference standings.

With the score tied 4-4 between the schools, it was left up to Tarboro's No. 2 seeded doubles team Hannah Whitehurst and Kaylyn Norville to win the match.

It was all riding on their backs. After losing the first three games and struggling to comeback, they finally poured on the steam and worked the match back to an 8-8 tie. In the deciding tiebreaker, the score went back and forth until Whitehurst and Norville finally put it away with a 9-8 win.

"We started out slow, but came on strong," Tarboro coach Wendy Armstrong said. "At the very last minute we put the match away."

Tarboro was able to win four singles matches, which helped them stay in the match. No. 1 seed Shayla Thorne won her match 6-4, 6-3 and No. 3 seed Michelle Nguyen shutout her opponent 6-0, 6-0. No. 4 and No. 5 seeds Norville and Monica Latham were able to beat their singles opponents as well.

Riverside had squeaked by the Vikings two weeks ago the same way Tarboro won Tuesday.

If the standings stay the same, there will be a playoff match to see which team gets the first seed in the conference for the dual team tournament.
