Warriors shutout Jaguars 3-0

RETURNING TO FORM

LEGGETT — LEGGETT – North Edgecombe made quick work of the Rocky Mount Prep Jaguars Tuesday in Two Rivers Conference action. After a rough start the Warriors settled in nicely and dominated the rest of the match. They defeated the Jaguars 3-0 in just an hour and 10 minutes.

"We played aggressive and well all around today," Warriors coach Marion King said. "It was expected because we had a good practice yesterday. I told them that we were starting conference play and everyone was even in the standings so we needed to get off on the right track."

King told her team before the match that they needed to go out and play hard. She didn't want any excuses and wanted them to play like they had practiced the day before. Her team responded in grand fashion after they had a sluggish start.

North Edgecombe (5-0, 1-0) started off struggling as both teams were having trouble getting their serves in. Marquisha Tucker broke the cycle and won a point for the Warriors on a spike. Tucker then took business into her own hands and reeled off five straight service points. After her serve was broke, she helped get the Warriors the serve back after scoring a point on a volley. Alexandria Eatmon then scored three straight points on serve to give the Warriors a 15-10 advantage. After scoring another point and getting the serve back, Brittany Blackwell put the set in her hands and scored nine straight points off of serve with her teammates help as the Warriors closed out the first set and won 25-11.

The second set started like the first one did with both teams trading bad serves. With the score knotted at 6-6 from bad serves, it forced King to take a timeout. She told her team she wasn't pleased with what she was seeing.

"I told them to settle down," King said. "I let them know we can't have those moments when we just stand there and no one is ready to play. I told them all to be ready on every serve."

Adasia Pittman and Blackwell helped get the Warriors going with service points. Tucker added a spike in the mix of things. Tucker then added five straight service points. Kaylah Thorne closed out the set with an ace to give the Warriors the 25-17 edge.

"We can't give points away with bad serves," King said. "I let them know after the second set that they needed to fix it in the third set. We haven't been giving points away on bad serves so I don't know what the problem was today. We gave way too many points away that should have never happened."

The Warriors answered King's request in the third set. They had just one bad serve in the third set compared to the 13 in the previous two. The set turned out to be all Warriors, until the Jaguars broke Tia Sumler's serve. Tucker got the Warriors the serve back three serves later on another spike and then added five more service points down the stretch.

"Marquisha and Brittany always give us good service points," King said. "I can depend on them all over the court whether it be at the net or serving. When we interchange most of the time we do well. I have some others who give us good serves and make the right plays."

North Edgecombe will travel to Williamston Thursday to play Riverside at 5 p.m.
