Tarboro swimmers advance to states

ROCKY MOUNT — Tarboro Vikings sophomore swimmer Cameron Anderson put on a show in the pool Friday at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary during the 1-A/2-A NCHSAA swimming regionals.

Anderson dominated the waters during both of his individual events and won first place and also helped guided the boys 200-yard freestyle relay team to 4th place and 200-yard medley team to 7th place.

Anderson won his first event of the day in the 50-yard freestyle with a final time of 22.24 and was 11 seconds faster than he competition. Also in that event was Viking Matthew Thompson who finished 12th with a time of 24.12 and finishing 16th was SouthWest Edgecombe Cougar Jalen Dickens with a time of 24.41.

 In his second event, Anderson swiped first place again as he was the fastest swimmer in the pool in the boys 100-yard freestyle event. He captured a time of 48.59 which was seven seconds faster then the second place finisher. Thompson finished 23rd in the event with a time of 54.69 and Dickens finished 21st with a final time of 53.83

In the relay events that Anderson competed in, he helped his team to a 4th and 7th place finish. In the boys 200-yard freestyle relay, Anderson, Thompson, David McIntyre and Alex King finished 4th with a time of 1:37.04 which was five seconds slower then the first place team. The Cougars also had a relay team in the event that consisted of Dickens, Nathan Webb, Samuel Eason and Ryan Chatt. They finished in 23rd place with a time of 1:53.34 In the Viking boys relay teams second event, they finished in 7th place in the 200-yard medley relay when they had a time of 1:52.55.

King also swam in an individual event. he finished 21st in the 200-yard individual medley event.

The girls relay teams faired a little better then the boys. Chandler Harris, Anna Johnson, Victoria Modlin and Kaylyn Norville also were dominating factors for the Vikings during their relay events. The girls relay team finished in the 3rd place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:48.06 which was just five and a half seconds slower then the first place finishers. In the girls second relay event, they finished in 4th place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:52.55 which was a little over eight seconds slower then first place.

Harris was a dominating factor for the Vikings in the water as well in her individual events. She finished in 4th place in the 100-yard butterfly event with a time of 1:00.50 which was just two seconds slower then first place. She also had a 5th place finish when she finished with a time of 26.21 in the 50-yard freestyle event. That time was just a second and a half slower then the winner.

Norville contributed for the Vikings as well in her individual events. She finished in 8th place in the 100-yard freestyle and was 14th in the 200-yard freestyle event.

All swimmers in the regionals that finished with a 12th place finish or higher was able to advance to the NCHSAA state championship event that is scheduled to be held Saturday.

Harris was pleased with her teams performance and said going into the event that she wasn't surprised by the number the of swimmers competing this year in the regionals. Now that her all of her swimmers have qualified for at least one event in the finals, she is just as excited as before the regionals were approaching.

"This group of swimmers set their goals even before the season began – qualifying for the states not just in one event but multiple," Harris said.
