BLACKSBURG, Va. — Ryan Hawkins, a rising senior at Virginia Tech University and grandson of Archie R. Hawkins of Tarboro, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large team.
Hawkins, a diver, earned a spot on the third team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Hawkins earned a spot on the third team for the second year in a row. The rising senior from Charlotte, N.C., is just the second Virginia Tech male swimmer to earn the award and the first to garner the award twice.
Hawkins also collected his third academic honor this season, which includes the men’s Capital One Academic All-District and All-ACC Academic teams. Hawkins is an AllAmerican in the 3-meter event and two-time All-American in the platform event. The architecture major won the 2012 ACC title in the platform event and competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials
Earlier this year, Hawkins was named an All-American on back-to-back days to close the 2013 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships Saturday at Indiana University.
Hawkins tallied a score of 422.40 to place third in the preliminaries, the highest finish by a Virginia Tech swimmer or diver ever at the NCAAs, to secure the honors.
Hawkins led the No. 20 Hokies with 27 of the team’s 52 national championship points.
