Vikings advance to second round

TARBORO — The Tarboro Vikings tennis team traveled to Robeson County Tuesday to play in the first round of the NCHSAA 2-A state playoffs in tennis against Fairmont. The Vikings came out victorious after defeating Fairmont 5-2.

The Vikings were ahead after the first match in doubles so there was no need to play the final two doubles matches.

The Vikings first seed, Julie Hayes won her singles match 2-1. She won the first set 6-3, but dropped the second set 6-3 and bounced back to win the third set 11-9.

Hayes also won the Eastern Plains Conference tournament last week in Snow Hill.

The second and third seeds for the Vikings dropped their matches.

No. 2 seed, Shayla Thorne lost in three sets. She won the first set 6-2, but dropped the next two sets 6-4 and 10-4.

The third seed Hanna Whitehurst dropped the first set 6-2, but battled back to win the second set 6-3. She lost a close third set 11-9.

The fourth seeded Viking Michele Nguyen, won her match in two straight sets 6-1 and 6-0, while the fifth seed Kaylyn Norville won in straight sets as well, 6-1 and 6-0.

Andrea Montoya won her match in straight sets in the sixth seeded match, 6-2 and 6-4.

In doubles action, Hayes and Whitehurst won their match 10-2.

Tarboro will be back in action Tuesday when they play Carrboro.
