Tarboro is coming off a great journey in 2-A football, where they made five consecutive appearances in the NCHSAA state championship game – winning three straight under coach Jeff Craddock. This season Craddock and his Vikings have embarked on a new journey, which is making it back to the state championship game, but in a different classification – the 1-AA.
Tarboro earned the No. 1 seed in the East bracket Saturday when the state released them. They will start the journey at home when they host a subpar No. 8 seeded Spring Creek Gator team who is 3-8. Spring Creek has lost five of their last seven games and finished in a three way tie for fourth place in their conference.
Tarboro has defeated their last five opponents by an average of 47 plus points and won the Two Rivers title.
The North Edgecombe Warriors are coming off a tough loss to Tarboro, but coach Keith Parisher and his team are taking the positives from the loss and building from them heading into their first round game of the 1-A playoffs. The Warriors were tagged the No. 3 seed in the Mideast bracket after finishing fourth in the Two Rivers Conference. They will host a No. 6 seed East Columbus team who finished the season winning just two of their last eight games and finished the season with a 4-7 record.
SouthWest Edgecombe earned a spot in the playoffs as a wild card team when they were pegged the No. 16 seed in the 2-AA East bracket. The Cougars lost a tough conference game Friday to Beddingfield that could've changed the whole complexion of the Cougars run in the playoffs. SouthWest has to travel to High Point to play a No. 1 seed T.W. Andrews team who finished the season 10-1. T.W. Andrews' only loss of the season came in their first game against High Point Central. Since then, they have reeled off 10 straight wins with them all being blowouts.
SouthWest is making their 10th straight trip to the playoffs and it will be the first trip for coach Jonathan Cobb, who is in his first season as the Cougars skipper.
