Viking netters dominate Firebirds

TARBORO — The Tarboro Lady Vikings tennis team bounced back Wednesday when they defeated the Southern Nash Lady Firebirds 8-1. This was the Vikings third time defeating the Firebirds.

Tarboro's No. 1 seed Shayla Thorne had a spectacular comeback in her match during the first set. She was down 1-4 to Crystal Rodriguez, but fought her way back and won the set 7-5. She went on to win the match and the second set 6-4.

"Shayla showed great fortitude and mental toughness," Vikings Coach Wendy Armstrong said. "She was able to dig herself out of a hole in the first set and overcome her opponent."

Second seed Hannah Whitehurst won her first set with ease 6-1 and closed out the match with a 6-3 win against Grayson Drefuss. Michele Nguyen, who is the Vikings third seed, dominated her match in both sets. She defeated Anna Webb 6-0, 6-0.

Victoria Modlin played in her first competitive varsity match as the Vikings No. 6 seed. She defeated Visa Gonzales in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Anna Johnson was also able to give the Vikings a boost as the fifth seed. She defeated her opponent 6-3, 6-2. Johnson has been playing as the Vikings sixth seed.

Monica Latham was the only Viking to lose her match. She lost to Denise Gonzales 4-6, 4-6 in straight sets.

"All of the girls played exceptional tennis," Armstrong said. "We dominated them."

Tarboro also dominated in doubles. They won all three matches.
