Vikings win singles, doubles conference titles

TARBORO — The Tarboro Vikings tennis team continued their journey in accomplishing major goals this season. They have a senior, Lane Long, who has cruised through his matches and continued to do so in the Eastern Plains Conference tournament this week.

Long who was recently named the conference Player of the Year for the second year straight, won the singles championship Wednesday when he defeated Greene Central's Bobby Taylor in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Also Viking David McIntyre finished in third place in the tournament and earned a right to play in the state playoffs in singles action. He earn that spot when he defeated Greene Central's Quinton Thigpen in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Tarboro had no choice, but to win the doubles championship, because the two finals teams were from Tarboro. Paul Nguyen and Robbie Collins defeated their teammates Emory Hare and Cole McIntyre in two sets.

Tarboro had all six of their players named to the All-Conference team.

The Vikings begin the state playoff dual team matches on Tuesday, against an unknown wild card team in Tarboro. On Friday, they go back to Green Central in Snow Hill to begin the individual play where Lane Long and David McIntyre will play singles. The doubles teams of Nguyen and Collins and Hare and Cole McIntyre will begin their quest to survive and advance.

Coach Rusty Holderness has been pleased with his teams overall performance this season and is looking for them to make great strides in the playoffs.
