Viking swimmers making successful strides in pool

TARBORO — ROCKY MOUNT – Last Thursday the Tarboro High School Vikings girls and boys swim team participated in their second meet of the season. The Big East 3A/Eastern Plains 2A meet was once again held at the Harrison Family YMCA in Rocky Mount, with teams from both conferences participating.

In girls team competition, the 200-yard medley relay team of Kaylyn Norville (backstroke), Anna Johnson (breaststroke), Chandler Harris (butterfly) and Victoria Modlin (freestyle) once again captured first place, knocking off 0.13 seconds from the previous week. These young ladies also took first place in the 200-yard freestyle relay, dropping 1.20 seconds from their earlier time.

Chandler Harris won first place in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly, Anna Johnson captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle and second in the 100-yard breaststroke, Kaylyn Norville won first place in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke, Victoria Modlin finished first in the 100-yard freestyle and the 50-yard freestyle and Rachel Tanhauser finished third in the 100-yard backstroke and took second place in the 200-yard freestyle and Anna Keck Moore finished eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

For the boys, the 200-yard medley relay team of Evan Vercoe (backstroke), David McIntyre (breaststroke), Cameron Anderson (butterfly) and Alex King (freestyle) placed third, knocking off 2 full seconds from their previous effort, and in the 200-yard freestyle placed a close second, dropping 2.86 seconds from their time.

Individually for the boys, Cameron Anderson captured first in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke, David McIntyre finished third in the 100-yard freestyle and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle, Evan Vercoe placed fourth in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke, Alex King finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke and Cole McIntyre finished ninth in the 500-yard freestyle.

If a swimmer earns an automatic time, they qualify for regionals which will be held in February. Many of the swimmers have either automatically qualified or have a consideration times from the first two meets. Head swim coach Michelle Harris said "She was very proud of the athletes and the accomplishments that they have made so early in the season."
