Norville benefit baseball game Saturday

TARBORO — The third annual Bennie Strickland Tim Dew Summer Baseball Classic will be held Saturday at SouthWest Edgecombe at 7:00 pm. Tarboro and SouthWest alumni will play a 9 inning game.

This year's proceeds will go to Eric Norville, a rising senior at SouthWest. Norville was diagnosed with brain cancer. He is currently undergoing radiation and chemotherapy treatments. The proceeds will be donated to his family to help with medical expenses.

The Strickland Dew Foundation was created in honor of Bennie Strickland and Tim Dew. Both men were well known and well respected in this community.

Strickland was a lover of all sports and arranged a bike race in town, due to the lack of activities in the area. He encouraged and supported his children and grandchildren and never missed one of his grandson's home baseball games.

Dew played professional baseball with the All Army Team, with the Tarboro league and with the neighborhood children in the pasture on Sunday afternoons. He was large man with an even larger heart. These men were kind and giving.

There will be raffle items, 50/50 drawings, a homerun derby and plenty of family fun. There will also be concessions available.
