TARBORO — ROCKY MOUNT – Last week both the Tarboro High School Viking girls and boys swim teams firmly established themselves as a team to be reckoned with in the upcoming state regionals. In meets held in Rocky Mount and Smithfield, swimmers from both teams continued to show great improvement and lowered many times in the process.

Last Thursday at the Harrison Family YMCA in Rocky Mount, the girls team once again dominated the larger 3A schools in the Big East 3A swim meet. The girls relay team in the medley and freestyle events, consisting of Chandler Harris, Anna Johnson, Kaylyn Norville and Victoria Modlin, remained undefeated for the year. Harris qualified for the regionals in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. Norville went from consideration to qualifying in the 100-yard backstroke. And making consideration times for the regionals were Johnson the 50-yard freestyle, Modlin in the 100-yard butterfly and Rachel Tanhauser in the 500-yard freestyle.

The boys team finally broke through and captured first place in the 200-yard medley relay, after finishing second and third week after week. Members of the boys relay team are Alex King (backstroke), Cameron Anderson (breaststroke), Matthew Thompson (butterfly) and David McIntyre (freestyle). Thompson also went from consideration to qualifying for the regionals in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events.

On Saturday morning the teams traveled to Smithfield and the competed against Big East 3A teams and teams from Johnston County at the Johnston County swim complex.  "Words can not express the joy I feel when I see these "kids" get their best time," Vikings coach Michelle Harris said. "They swim a race they do not "like" and finish with a smile on their face, qualify for regionals, or just finish period (especially the 500-yard freestyle)! If you have not had a chance to see these athletes in action... it's your loss! But wait! You have one more chance! Next Friday, January 11 is Senior Night. This will be our last meet of the regular season before we continue to train for regionals. Please come out and support these wonderful athletes as they entertain and amaze the spectators one last time".

The meet be held at the Harrison Family YMCA in Rocky Mount, beginning at 4 p.m.
