TARBORO — PINETOPS – Bad serves and costly errors forced the SouthWest Edgecombe Lady Cougars into a deep hole Tuesday that they couldn't dig themselves out of when they dropped three out of four sets to the Greene Central Lady Rams.

SouthWest had beaten the Rams the first time the two teams met earlier in the season, but the Rams were looking for revenge and got it.

The Cougars jumped out to an early 15-9 lead after Bria Lewis reeled off three points in a row on serve, but the Rams broke Lewis' serve. Greene Central went on a 6-0 run that consisted of three ace serves. SouthWest got the serve back off of a bad serve by the Rams. Rashawnda Peavy scored a point off serve, but the Rams broke her serve after that. After another bad serve by the Rams, Montana York gave the Cougars a 19-16 lead on an ace serve, but the Rams broke her serve and went on another 6-0 run that had two aces added into the mix. Dawson Gould earned the Cougars the serve back after a big spike and then she scored on serve, but the Rams broke her serve and put the game away and won the first set 25-23.

In the second set, the Cougars fall apart after the Rams took an 8-1 lead which had two aces mixed in on the run. After trading bad serves, Greene Central went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-7 lead. SouthWest scored only three more points in the set on a Gould spike and two Peavy spikes. The Rams took the second set 25-10.

SouthWest fought back in the third set after putting a 5-0 run together behind Peavy's serve and York reeled off three points from serve. Gould scored two points on blocked shots and the Cougars won the third set 25-22.

The fourth set was back and forth. Gould scored on five straight serves to give the Cougars a 21-17 lead. Greene Central broke the serve and scored two points off of aces. After a Peavy spike broke the Rams serve, Greene Central went a 4-0 run to lead 23-22. After a bad serve by the Rams, SouthWest tied the game at 23-23. Greene Central scored a point on a questionable call and then the Cougars tied it up again at 24-24, but the Rams would score on two straight serves to take the set 26-24 and the match.

Lewis had 14 good serves and a dig for the Cougars, while Gould had 10 good serves, two digs and three blocks. York had 10 good serves and Peavy finished with 10 as well, but had two digs and a block.

SouthWest will be back in action Thursday when they host the Farmville Central Jaguars.
