Bruins dominate Cougars in three sets

TARBORO — PINETOPS – Playing together as team seemed to be a problem for the SouthWest Edgecombe Lady Cougars Tuesday when they were swept in three straight sets by the Beddingfield Lady Bruins in Eastern Plains Conference action.

"We quit playing together," Cougars head coach Jennifer Smith said. "That is all there is to it and we quit playing hard."

Smith said she has been trying to get the team to play together as a unit all season and that is the main issue while they are struggling. When they start to lose they just fall apart.

The Cougars struggled from the beginning, when the Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first set. SouthWest battled back and took a 9-6 lead after Dawson Gould scored two consecutive points on spikes and Rashwnda Peavy won five service points and added an ace serve in the mix. Beddingfield battled back and scored five straight points before Gould won two consecutive service points to give the Cougars a 14-13 lead, but that didn't last long. The Bruins outscored the Cougars 12-4 and won the first set 25-18.

The second set started out in the Cougars favor, but numerous mistakes were made and they let the Bruins back in the match. SouthWest led 10-3 after Gould scored four straight service points, but Beddingfield won back to back points on ace serves and then had two monster spikes. The Bruins battled back and outscored the Cougars 22-9 to take the second set.

The third set went down hill quick for the Cougars. The Bruins jumped out to an 11-3 lead and used the middle of the Cougars side of the court to score on four consecutive points with spikes.

SouthWest tried to make a run after Smith called a timeout, but the Bruins weren't going to let that happen. After Kaylan Page scored on two straight serves, Beddingfield broke the serve and reeled off five points in a row. Gould scored another point with a spike and then won a service point, but the Bruins shut down the Cougars from that point on and took the third set 25-12.

Gould finished the match with 12 service points and had six points off of spikes, while Peavy added six points off of spikes and won eight service points. Montana York also won three service points and Brooke Pierce added two points off of tips.

The Cougars will be back in action Tuesday when they host the Greene Central Lady Rams in an Eastern Plains matchup.
