TARBORO — • GISELE SCHAEFFER, who observed a youngster in distress in a court room getting comfort from a stuffed bear and now makes them for the sheriff’s department to give away.

In addition to the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Department, Schaeffer also makes the bears for Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

• Tarboro’s TIM CUNNINGHAM, on being inducted in the Isshin-Ryu Hall of Fame in Chattanooga, Tenn. Cunningham has been teaching Isshin-Ryu on Tarboro since 1982.

• Tarboro high school teacher/coach LESHAUN JENKINS, on being selected to coach in the 2013 East-West Soccer All-Star Game in Greensboro. Jenkins is currently on a mission trip to Haiti.

• TARBORO POLICE, on conducting the community’s first National Night Out. While the weather choose to not cooperate, the turnout was good and encouraging for future efforts.

• The EDGECOMBE ENTREPRENEUR ORGANIZATION, on making the decision to raise funds to purchase two houses to help persons still in distress in Haiti more than two years after devastating eartquakes rocked the country.

• EDGECOMBE COUNTY SHERIFF JAMES KNIGHT, on being presented a service award by the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association.
