Last-minute flurry finalizes candidates for fall elections

Our views

TARBORO — Whether you consider yourself to be a Democrat, Independent or Republican — or whether you prefer the unafilliated label — you’ll have a choice when it comes to candidates in this fall’s municipal elections in Edgecombe County.

In fact, since filing got under way at noon on July 5, 39 Edgecombe County residents filed for 23 seatss up for election.

Only seven seats were left uncontested, including one in Tarboro, one in Conetow, two in both Macclesfield and Pinetops and one in Rocky Mount.

There are names familiar to some and unknown to others, but the bottom line is that the 39 men and women stepped to the plate to put their private lives on hold and subject themselves to the scrutiny of those in our society who always opine “I could do better than that,” yet always seem to miss the dealine when it comes time to put their money where their mouth is.

We salute these 39 men and women for taking the step — some of them again — and encourage them to get to know you and for you to do the same, because based on where you live, they just might be your representative in municipal government.

And while the elections are months away, remember to register to vote.
