Football Fridays not just about game on field

TARBORO — This is the week when it’s time for local schools to be ready, as Friday night signals the start of the 2013 high school football season.

But it’s not just about the game.

Yes, the players and what they do ... the numbers that wind up on the scoreboard ... the stories that wind up in print ... the “W” and the “L” ... all matter, but it’s not everything.

There are hundreds of others who have worked hard to be reay to perform under Friday night’s lights — the band members, who have marched and practiced ... the cheerleaders, who have gone to camp to learn new routines and then returned home to practice and, hopefully perfect them ... and the pep squads and drill teams and everyone else invoved in making Friday night football the grand production it is.

If you go to a game on Friday — and we hope you do — we encourage you to be supportive of all of the young men and women who are representing both schools and take the time to show your apprciation for the hard work they put in so they would be ready for your eyes.

And since the games of the 30th Olympics have ended, we’ll borrow the opening line and apply it to our high school football ... Let the games begin!
