‘Writer summits no evidence’
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A recent letter writer ( "I truly fear that history is about to repeat itself" July 15) really went on a tirade against President Bush, Congress and just about every facet of the U.S. government. The Bush administration was called, “a criminal regime…committing treason, high crimes, shredding our Constitution, etc.”  Of course the writer summits no evidence.

He goes on to attack Congress for its willingness to pass any unconstitutional legislation this criminal president demands. The evidence of this, of course, is zero.  Whatever this criminal president wants Congress will pass, so says the writer.  The writer sees martial law and a fascist dictatorship coming.

Of course, he feels that Congress should impeach the president and vice president, but no specific factual charges are mentioned and no evidence is given.  The Dem’s have controlled Congress for two years now, and they would love to impeach if there were any grounds to do so.  The third branch of our government, The Supreme Court, has and will do a good job of striking down unconstitutional legislation, but just calling something unconstitutional doesn’t make it so.

The writer fears that history is about to repeat itself, again no specifics of what history he’s talking about.

Ironically, he supports his rants and raves with a James Madison quote. President Madison contributed a lot to this nation and made a number of good quotes, although many contradicted themselves. We should also remember that Madison led this nation into the War of 1812. The war went poorly for several years, with Madison reversing many of his positions. It was during this time that the British burned the White House, the Capitol, the Navy Yard and other public buildings.

In rating our worse wars, by lives lost in relation to the U.S. population at that time, the War of 1812 was one of our worst. We must remember that the worst wars are the ones that are fought on our own soil.
