Is no news always good news?
LETTER TO THE EDITOR

My daughter is a junior at Tarboro High School, and she was nominated by the guidance counselors for Governor's School.

"WOW" what an honor!

She worked closely with her teachers in getting the application completed and submitted to the guidance counselor in November.

During the month of March, students started receiving their letters stating if they had been accepted or not. Mindful, most students were not accepted and only two students from THS were chosen to attend.

By spring break, my child still had not received notification of any sort whether or not she had been accepted to Governor's School.

I found myself leaving numerous messages with the Edgecombe County Public School's Central Office and after running into the Director of Community Relations, while on lunch, asked for her help in getting someone to return my call. Still no response.

Where is our leadership?

After doing some research I found that my child is not the only child nominated that has never received a letter of notification. It was told to both the students and parents by the THS guidance counselors office that every packet submitted was sent to the Central Office who would then forward them to the Governor's School office in Raleigh.

I took matters into my own hands as most parents would, and called the Governor's School office myself.

I was told by the Governor's School office that they had no record of my child's application and if they had received it we would have gotten a response back. Yep, you guessed it ... no letter of notification from either the Governor's School or the Edgecombe County Central Office!

Where is my child's application?

My main concern at this point is, What is going on with our leadership in the Edgecombe County School System?

I have spoken with many of the parents in our community who, feel they too, can not get a response when there is a concern or question. Everyone has heard the saying "No News Is Good News;" for my child and other children within our system it seem "No news is not so good."

But for Dr. Witherspoon's recent interview with the school system in South Carolina, hopefully it means to all of us that "No news will be good news"!

On behalf of all the concerned parents,
