TARBORO — Tarboro — On the morning of November 5, Miriam Tate Scott Mayo passed quietly into Heaven, surrounded by her loving family and closest friends.  At that same moment, Tarboro, Hawfields and North Carolina lost one of their kindest, sweetest, most humble and most gentle souls.

Miriam was born at Hawfields in Alamance County, North Carolina on May 30, 1927, the oldest child of Ralph Henderson and Hazelene Tate Scott.  She was a member of an old North Carolina family that believed in working for the good of all people, giving back to the community and who served in various elected positions over several generations.  Miriam lived her entire life with the very same altruistic traditions that were instilled in her as a child by her selfless family.  She grew up attending Hawfields Presbyterian Church and as an adult, she was a dedicated member of Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she was also one of the first women Elders.  She believed strongly in her God, her Church, and in giving to her Community and those less fortunate.  She loved her family and friends deeply; and she was loved deeply by all who were fortunate to know her.

Miriam graduated from the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro) with a degree in Home Economics and Chemistry.  She taught Home Economics in both Edenton and Tarboro, North Carolina.  After only a year in Tarboro, she met and married her husband of 52 years, Columbus (“Lum”) Washington Mayo, III, who passed away in 2005.  During her long life, Miriam gave generously to a wide variety of charities and causes and served as both a member and officer of many local clubs and committees, but one of her favorite community roles was as a Den Mother for her sons.

Miriam Scott Mayo is survived by her sons Scott Tribble Mayo of Raleigh; Columbus Washington Mayo, IV and his wife, Julie Voreis Mayo of Tarboro; Bryan Tate Mayo and his wife, Judy Rumsey Mayo of Tarboro; and Stephen Carrington Mayo of Wilmington; six grandchildren, Ryan Mayo, Jonathan Mayo, Julianne Mayo, Bryan Tate Mayo Jr., Miriam Grace Mayo and Deanna Mayo.  She is also survived by her brother, Ralph Henderson Scott, Jr. and brother and sister-in-law, William C. and Linda Scott of Burlington, North Carolina, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ben Coakley and Ann Mayo of Tarboro; and two special friends, Dr. R. Bertram Williams, Jr. and Mrs. Ethel Ruth Jones.

As inscribed on her Mother’s tombstone in Hawfields, and so appropriate for Miriam:  From Galatians, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, goodness, gentleness, meekness; against such there is no law.”

The family wishes to thank all of Miriam’s doctors, nurses, friends and Vidant Hospice for their special care and help during her illness.

Friends are welcomed to visit at the family home at 1500 West Canal Street in Tarboro on Thursday night from 6:00- 8:00.  A memorial service will be held at Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church Friday November 8 at 11:00.   In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Howard Memorial Presbyterian Church at 303 East St. James Street, Tarboro, North Carolina 27886.

Arrangements are by Carlisle Funeral Home, Inc. of Tarboro. Online condolences may be directed to the family by visiting
