FAYETTEVILLE — FAYETTEVILLE — Tyree Bryan (Bill) Tyson, wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather, devoted husband and brother and World War II Veteran passed away Saturday, November 9, 2013.

Mr. Tyson was preceded in death by his loving wife Jacksie, his mother and father Bessie and Walter Tyson, and by his brothers Gene, Woodrow and John, and sisters Hallie and Hilda.

He is survived by his sons Bryan and David, his grandson Trey and wife Kendall, great-grandson Case, and sister Lois Cleaton.  He will be missed greatly by all who loved him so much.

In July of 2011, Bill Kirby, Jr. of the Fayetteville Observer wrote the following article about Bill Tyson:

A good neighbor, an honest man, a war hero

Bill Tyson was born July 27, 1925, to Walter E. and Bessie Moye Tyson in Oak City down in the eastern quadrant of the state.

He graduated from Oak City High in 1942, and like most men of that age, was called by Uncle Sam on Oct. 27, 1943, to serve his country.

He was assigned to Company B of the 26th Infantry, and he was a machine gunner in World War II.

He saw the carnage of battle.

He saw the bloodied bodies on the shore and in the waters of Normandy beachhead in France, six days after his company arrived after D-Day's June 6, 1944 invasion.

"I did get over there," he says.

And out.

But not before being injured by mortar fire Nov. 19, 1944, at the Battle of Hurtgen Forrest, a lengthy and fierce confrontation on German soil where more than 30,000 American soldiers lost their lives or were wounded.

Tyson left his military service on Jan. 5, 1945, along with a European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with four stars, a Bronze Star, a Distinguished Service Medal, a Victory Medal ... and, of course, the Purple Heart.

Back home he met Jacksie Ellen Price on a blind date, and they married June 6, 1947, in Tarboro.

"We were together 62 years," Tyson remembers his wife who died 10 1/2 months ago at age 85. A lot of fellows have had four wives by that time."

Not Bill Tyson.

He had a gem.

He knew it, too.

Bill Tyson graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1949.

Bill and Jacksie moved here from Charlotte in 1966, built their dream home in the Briarwood neighborhood and raised two sons.

He worked at General Motors Acceptance Corp., a finance business, for 34 years, where he was known for his forthright honesty.

And when he wasn't plying his trade, you could find Bill Tyson working in his yard, playing golf or helping clear a path for kids to walk or ride their bicycles to and from nearby Glendale Acres Elementary School.

He's Tyree B. Tyson.

Call him Bill.

He's one of our gallant military heroes, and he loves calling Fayetteville home.

Now this gallant hero and father has been called to a higher home and he will be missed greatly.

The family wishes to thank Liz and Sandra Pollard, Inna Avanesova, Jean Bolton, and Ron McClean for their undying love and compassion during this time.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, November 12, from 6-8 pm at Jerrigan-Warren funeral home in Fayetteville.  Funeral services will be held at Snyder Memorial Baptist Church in Fayetteville on Wednesday, November 13 at 10 am.  Graveside services will follow at 3 pm in Edgecombe Memorial Park in Tarboro.
