TARBORO — To the Editor:

It breaks my heart to look at the puppies and kittens at the Tarboro Animal Shelter pictured in Monday’s editions of the Daily Southerner.  June is National Adopt a Shelter Pet Month, and I pray these fur babies will find a good forever home.  Bucking a statewide and national trend, the kittens have a better chance of getting adopted than the puppies.  Why?

Tarboro TNR (Trap, Neuter & Return) & Feline Friends, Inc., began pulling adoptable cats and kittens from the Tarboro Animal Shelter in 2011, getting them spayed or neutered and up-to-date on their shots, and taking them to adoption events. The kill rate dropped dramatically.  In looking at the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services 2011 Animal Shelter report, the Tarboro Animal Shelter took in 220 cats and had 52 adopted or returned to their owner, for a 10 percent kill rate.  In 2010, the kill rate was over 98 percent.  The Tarboro Animal Shelter did not file a report for 2012, but Tarboro TNR & Feline Friends, Inc. rescued over 150 cats and kittens and got them good homes as pets or barn cats.  Sadly, there is no group working to pull adoptable dogs, so their fate is far worse at an 81 percent kill rate.

Part of being a responsible pet owner is getting your dog or cat spayed or neutered.  Spaying or neutering helps your pet live a longer, healthier life by preventing certain infections and cancers, as well as making them better behaved.  The Town of Tarboro’s Public Works Department offers financial assistance to low-income families and residents for spaying and neutering pets.  Tarboro TNR & Feline Friends, Inc. may also be able to assist with feral cats inside the city limits.
