INEZ BROWN SIMMONS

TARBORO — TARBORO — Inez Brown Simmons, affectionately known as Inie and Nana, left her home on 1010 Main Street to go live with her husband, Walter Eugene Simmons, and all of the other saints in heaven on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2013.

Inie was born in Rexburg, Idaho on February 19th, 1919 to Henry Alonzo and Cynthia Lola Brown.  She graduated from the University of Idaho.  She served her country during World War II by joining the Red Cross and traveling to North Africa and Italy.

It was overseas where she met her husband, Gene, who brought her back to Tarboro, North Carolina to live for the remainder of her sweet life.

After coming back to America following World War II, she took an active role in her new community and church by volunteering her services in joyful and faithful spirit.

Her most loved place in Tarboro was Edgecombe County Memorial Library where she served on the board for many years.

Her favorite place on earth was her small den made out of pine, and it was in this room where she invited friends and family for apples and cheese, vanilla milkshakes and sometimes, a little Scotch. It was also in this room that had gas logs that were kept on even in August where she directed her two daughters, promoted her grandchildren and lovingly doted on her great grandchildren.

Able to dance and sing at many weddings, Nana was the life of every party she attended, and her sense of humor and love of life were the great treasure of her community.

Even in the last year when her health was failing, Inie was able to tell a great joke and keep the mood light.

She loved her daughters, her sons-in-law, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren with all of her heart, mind and soul.  She is preceded in death by her husband, her mother and father, her brother and sisters and many, many dear friends.

She will be missed greatly and daily by her daughters: Cynthia Simmons Boylan and husband, George, of Wilmington and Mattie Simmons Carstarphen and husband, Bill, of Tarboro; her granddaughters: Grizzelle Burton Holderness of Tarboro, Inez Simmons Holderness Ribustello and husband, Stephen, of Tarboro and their children, Cynthia and Stephen; Grey and Marc Seate of Raleigh; Anna and Brent Howard of Raleigh; Frances and Clark Jenkins of Morehead City; Kate and Tommy Honey of Rocky Mount and grandson Ken Miller and his wife, Elizabeth, of Tarboro, and all of their children and loving caregivers Diane Hines, Naomi Arnold and Rene Ingram.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 5th at Calvary Episcopal Church, where the family will greet friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Episcopal Churchyard Fund, 411 East Church St., Tarboro 27886 and the American Red Cross.

Arrangements are by Carlisle Funeral Home, Inc., Tarboro.
