LORETTA FORBES HARRELL

WHITAKERS — TARBORO — Loretta Pitt Forbes Harrell of Tarboro passed away October 29, 2013 in Winston-Salem, NC.   She was born June 2, 1932, grew up in Crisp, N.C. and was the eldest child to Clarence Leslie Forbes and Lucy Mae Abrams Forbes, longtime Edgecombe County residents. She married the late Redin Paul Harrell, Jr. in 1955.

Loretta began work at The Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1950 and worked in accounting most of her career.  She made lifelong friends among her co-workers and enjoyed decades of close-knit friendships with work associates. Loretta especially enjoyed and valued her large family; they remained central to her life and are all Tarboro residents. She was the eldest of six children and often laughed and told stories about growing up quickly, helping her mother with her siblings and working with her father on the farm, and being the matriarch of the Forbes Family. Even through her recent challenges with dementia, she spoke of each sibling with kindness, clarity, and recalled her life in Edgecombe County fondly.   Her loving siblings are:  Elizabeth Dennie, Marsha Harris, C.G. Forbes, Brenda Coker, and Patricia League.

Loretta loved the game of bridge and enjoyed her multiple clubs throughout her life.  She was a member of the Tarboro Garden Club and First Baptist Church.  She enjoyed frequent trips to Chapel Hill and was a donor to the University of North Carolina and frequently went to Carolina football games.  She especially enjoyed her dogs and her grand-dogs, who were always welcome in her home, her retirement home, and her life.

She is survived by her two children:  Paul Leslie Harrell of Charlotte, and Tracey Harrell Weaver and her husband, David Weaver of Winston-Salem.  She is also survived by her beloved five grandchildren and one great-grandchild:  Mary-Forbes Harrell Arkwright of Asheville; India Kaitlin Harrell and Margaret Gray Harrell, both of Kansas City; David Hudson Weaver, Jr. and Leslie Forbes Weaver, both of Winston-Salem and great-grandchild Brooklyn Birnbaum of Kansas City.

A visitation will be at 10 a.m. and funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday November 1 at Carlisle Funeral Home in Tarboro.  At other times visitation will be at the home of Marsha Harris, 2003 Woodgreen Circle, Tarboro.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Winston-Salem Hospice at: Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, Attention: Finance, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or, the General Fund of the First Baptist Church of Tarboro.

Arrangements are by Carlisle Funeral Home, Inc. of Tarboro.
