HAMPTON, VA. — Laura Ella Smith Moore, 79, stepped into the arms of God on February 25, 2013. She was born on November 30, 1933 in Scotland Neck. She was the youngest of three girls born to Harry Smith and Lizzie Johnson Smith.
She attended Brawley Middle School and was baptized at Mount Calvary Baptist Church. In 1956, she married Ben Moore and became an Army wife. As a military spouse and mother, Laura served for 56 years. A world traveler, she made homes in 10 states and on three continents. She was proud to support her family by working as a cook and housekeeper. Her greatest joy was seeing all of her children graduate from college.
She leaves behind her husband, Benjamin Moore, of Manhattan, Kansas; her children: Maurice (Helena) Bowie Md. Ben Jr. , Tucson, Ariz., Lemuel (Pat), Ellicott City, Md., and Bobbie, Newport News, Va.; eight grandchildren: Tiffany, Christopher, Morgan Jonathan, Maurice Jr., Courtney, Kimberly and Deanna. She will be especially missed by her sister, Mary Cooper of Scotland Neck, and all her nieces, nephews and a host of family. A beloved sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she hopes you remember her for the good times and laughs she shared with you. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Salvation Army or the United Negro College Fund in her honor.
