LEXINGTON — LEXINGTON — William Michael Thomas, 60, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2014. Born in Tarboro, North Carolina, he was the son of Charlotte Phelps Thomas and the late William E. Thomas.

Thirty-two years ago he married his sweetheart, Windy B. Thomas, and together they created a home full of warmth, joy, and love. Although Mike did not experience the joy of bringing up children, he opened his heart and home to a long and memorable succession of pet dogs, all of whom he adored.

In addition to his interest in animals and the natural world, he loved spending time on Lake Murray. He could be seen on the water almost every afternoon in his pontoon boat after work and on weekends. He was an avid participant in life at Lake World and Jake’s Landing, reveling in discussions about all things fish, tackle, and bait.

Mike was a devoted husband, a loyal friend, a faithful son and brother, and a talented civil engineer who worked for his entire career of nearly thirty years at Florence & Hutcheson, Inc., now acquired by and known as Infrastructure Corporation of America.  These descriptions seem to us to be both completely accurate and wholly insufficient. Put simply, Mike was a good man to whom many people looked when the way forward was less than clear.  He approached life with an engineer’s logic and a lion’s heart.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Windy Bradham Thomas of the home, his mother, Charlotte Phelps Thomas and his sister, Carolyn Jeanne Thomas of Morrisville, N.C.; beloved cousins Rita Lilley Morrisville, N.C., Jereland William Roberson of Seven Lakes, N.C., Paula Merchant of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Lila Lamm of Cary, N.C. Additionally, he leaves to cherish his memory his Mother-in- Law, Lois M. Bradham, sister-in-law Nancy B. Baker (Steve), Lacy B. Bryant (Lee), all of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Perrin B. Soles (Josh), and Scarlett Elizabeth Soles of Conway, S.C. and Eleazer (Ellie), his faithful Red Bone Coon Hound.

The family would like to thank Dr. James A. Richter of Consultants in Gastroenterology and Dr. James A. Wells of Lexington Oncology for their compassionate and expert care during Mike’s valiant battle with cancer.

A service of Thanksgiving to our Heavenly Father for giving us the life and companionship of Mike and a celebration of his life will be held at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, S.C. 29212 at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service. A reception will be held on site following.

In lieu of flowers, please just whisper a prayer of thanks to our Heavenly Father for allowing us the privilege of knowing and loving Mike Thomas.
