MARTHA S. PARKS

TARBORO — TARBORO — Martha S. Parks passed away on Monday, September 20, 2013.

Martha was born August 18, 1922 in Rocky Mount. In her adult life, she was a health care worker in Raleigh, Richmond Va. and Durham, but spent most of her life in Tarboro. She also worked as an alterations seamstress for W.S. Clark’s, Adlers and Aldens in Tarboro.

She is survived by two children, a daughter, Frances Lewis Richardson (Rod) and son, James Lewis (Betty); five grandchildren: Barry Richardson (Debby), Elizabeth R. Kuhn (Michael), Daniel Lewis, David Lewis and Denise Lewis; five great-grandchildren: two in California, and Ian, Cameron and Charlotte Richardson of Newark, Del.; a niece, Dorothy Ball (Leo); a grandniece, Serena of Tarboro; a sister-in-law, Gaynell Lewis of Bethel and a brother-in-law, Seward Parks of Tarboro.

She is predeceased by her husband Cecil Parks, her sister, Ola Lee Whitehurst and a grandson, Brian Richardson.

She had many friends that were dear to her and comforted her in many ways, including Connie Bock, Marie Buckman, Eppie Lewis, Pat Lane, Connie Hull, Mary Jimmerson and Bessie Candies, as well as many others.

Martha was very colorful, different and had a particular personality. She was very proud of her American Indian heritage. She valued her independence and was happy that she was able to live on her own until shortly before her death. She loved her pet dog, Dolly, and pet cat, Blackie.

Even though in poor health for years, she loved life and for years enjoyed her little business of alterations. She had many customers whom she loved and enjoyed.

Her helpful, kind doctors, Dr. Gilbert Alligood of Tarboro and Dr. Jayesh Patel of Coastal Carolina Cardiology in Greenville helped her have many additional years of enjoyable life. Also, during the last year of her life, she benefited greatly from the care of the employees of Community Home Care and Hospice, Tarboro office and Golden LivingCenter in Tarboro.

A viewing will be held from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Friday at Carlisle Funeral Home, 701 Hospital Dr. Tarboro.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Edgecombe Memorial Park in Tarboro. The date will be announced later by Carlisle Funeral Home.

Flowers are welcome or a memorial donation can be made to the local ASPCA animal rescue organization.

Arrangements are by Carlisle Funeral Home, Inc. of Tarboro.
