TARBORO — John Wesley Whitfield, 84, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at his home in Conetoe following an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Hendricks, the Rev. Linda Kathryn-Clark, and Dr. Kenneth M. Lovett officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, N.C.

Mr. Whitfield is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Matt Mayo Whitfield, an infant son, John Wesley Whitfield, Jr., and 7 siblings.

John served as the mayor of Conetoe for 12 years. He was a member of the Republican National Committee and the Republican Inner Circle Senatorial Committee, having been inducted by Strom Thurmond, and dined with dignitaries such as former President George Herbert Walker Bush and former President Ronald W. Reagan. John was also a member of the Conetoe United Methodist Church, having served in various capacities.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory a loving family, including his daughter, Elizabeth “Liz” Whitfield, of Conetoe; grandsons, Matthew Wesley McLawhorn, and wife, Wendy, of Conetoe; Jason Whitfield McLawhorn, of Charlotte; great grandchildren, Marshall Jameson McLawhorn and Madeline Gray McLawhorn, of Conetoe; sister, Louise Trytko, of Atlanta, Georgia; sister-in-laws, Martha E. Mayo, of Conetoe; Frances W. Whitfield, of Bethel; caregivers, Antonio Garcia, Kathy Wilson Demery, Deborah Morris and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Flowers are welcome, but if desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Conetoe United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 128, Conetoe, N.C. 27819, or to Community Hospice of Rocky Mount, 3124 Zebulon Rd., Rocky Mount, N.C. 27804.

The family will receive friends and relatives on from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, April 12, at the Whitfield Estate, 7047 US Alt. 64 East, Tarboro.
