FOR THE DAILY SOUTHERNER
Macclesfield — Edna Webb Smith, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Breckenridge Retirement Center.
She was born on Sept. 4, 1917, and was the daughter of Ernest and Mary Crisp Owens. Edna was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Webb, Jr. who was the father of her children, and Richard Smith. Her oldest son, Ernest Todd Webb, sister, Susie Taylor and her dear friend, Larry Walston, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, Bobby Webb, and wife, Jo, of Rocky Mount; her daughter-in-law, Peggy Webb, of Crisp; and a daughter, Mary Jo Allen, and husband, Jim, of Macclesfield; six grandchildren, and eight-great grandchildren. Many of the students she taught while substituting in the Edgecombe County Schools also called her “grandma.”
Edna loved her family with a sweetness of spirit. Her neighbors in the Crisp community were dear to her, and she always said with pride that she was one of the Crisp family descendants. Another group that brought much comfort and love to Edna were the members of the Macclesfield Christian Church.
The family would like to extend gratitude and affection to the Breckenridge staff for the love, care, and kindness that was shown during her seven years there. Another expression of thanks is extended to the Community Home Care and Hospice who gave support during the last months of her life.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 10, from 7-9 pm at Carlisle Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, at the Pineview Cemetery in Pinetops.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Macclesfield Christian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 41, Macclesfield, 27852; or the Shriners’ Children’s Hospital, 403 E. Front St., New Bern, 28560.
