TARBORO — James Ray “J.R.” Anderson, 91, died peacefully in his home on Saturday, May 4, 2013, surrounded by his two daughters. A visitation will be held from 6:30 p,m - 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Carlisle Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013 at Edgecombe Memorial Park.
Born in Edgecombe County, Mr. Anderson was a veteran of World War II. He joined the US Marine Corps serving in the Pacific Theater as a communications/radio operator. Upon his discharge, he enrolled in Railroad Telegrapher School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he met his wife of 49 years, Mary. He was employed by the Seaboard Coastline Railroad as a telegrapher until his retirement in 1981.
In his early years, J.R. was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed bird hunting with his dogs and fishing in “Fishing Creek” behind his house.
A loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle, Mr. Anderson is survived by two daughters, Mary Buley of Chapel Hill and Carol Tart and husband David of Newton Grove; three grandchildren, Chris Koonce and wife Jennifer of Aubrey , Texas, Courtney Plaster and husband Brian of Carrboro, Caroline Langston and husband Cody of Fort Lewis, Wash.; one great-granddaughter, Ava Koonce of Aubrey, Texas; three sisters, Edna Pearl Weeks, Mildred Taylor and husband Joe, and Mary Anderson and husband V. B., all of Tarboro, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Anderson was preceded in death by his parents, Carrie and Ray Anderson, his beloved wife, Mary Anderson, and his brother and sister-in-law George “Bo” and Edna Anderson.

Family members will receive friends at 1602 Roberson Drive, Tarboro, beginning on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, after 2:00 pm.
