Henry Hyman Philips, Jr.

TARBORO — TARBORO — Henry Hyman Philips, Jr., 94, died at The Fountains at the Albemarle, Tarboro, on Monday, September 23, 2013.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, September 30, 2013 at Calvary Episcopal Church, with interment in the Churchyard with the celebrant, the Rev. Jane Rogers Wilson.

He was born September 26, 1918 in Greenville, the only child of Henry Hyman Philips and Ethel Skinner Philips. Hyman was educated in the Tarboro public schools; Episcopal High School, Alexandria Va. and UNC- Chapel Hill, 1940 AB, 1946 LLB, JD. While attending law school at Chapel Hill, Hyman was drafted in 1941 into the US Army Air Corps. He served 33 months in seven countries during World War II. He was discharged in 1945 as first lieutenant. In 1947 he was appointed captain of the Officers’ Reserve Corps, and in 1969 he transferred to the Retired Reserve of the United States Air Force as lieutenant colonel. He practiced law in Tarboro from 1946 to 1986; first with his father, until his father’s death in 1963. He was a communicant of Calvary Episcopal Church, Tarboro, where he served several terms on the vestry. He served on the Diocesan Council, the Standing Committee and a term as president of the Laymen of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina.

In 1958, Hyman was married at the Church of the Holy Family, Chapel Hill, to Virginia Joy Lester Saunders of Martinsville, Va.,  who predeceased him in 2010. His son, Henry Hyman Philips, III predeceased him in 2011. He is survived by his step-son, Michael Neal Saunders of Buena Vista, Va., a daughter, Patricia Philips Caviness, and her husband Keith and a granddaughter, Virginia Margaret Caviness, all of New Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Calvary Episcopal Churchyard Fund, 411 E. Church St., Tarboro, 27886. The family will receive friends at the home, 1108 Main Street, Tarboro.
