TARBORO — Janie Ray Conrad, 87, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 18.  Janie was born in Pitt County, N.C. on Nov. 30, 1924. She was a graduate of Louisburg College, N.C. in 1943 and was a member of Alpha Pi Epsilon, a national honorary fraternity. After college her adventurous spirit led her to Washington, D.C. where she was employed by the Australian Mission and TWA. At TWA, she met Sigmund Joseph Suskiewich. They were married in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1979. In 1989, Janie married Dr. Marshall Dean Conrad of Plattsburgh, Mo., gaining a whole new family of stepsons, a stepdaughter, and many grandchildren. Dr. Conrad preceded her in death in 2003. She moved to Louisville, Colo. in 2010 to be closer to her daughter and son.

Janie was an avid traveler who enjoyed trips throughout the U.S., Europe, the Middle East and Asia/Pacific, combining pleasure with the pursuit of art and religious history. She enjoyed walking, bridge, gardening, and art collecting and had a fine sense of humor. Family pets were a constant in her life. Janie was a life-long volunteer at various  hospitals.     

She is survived by a sister, Peggy James, of Greenville, N.C., a son, Don Suskiewich, and grandson, Charles Suskiewich, of Taos, N.M. and a daughter, Susan Suskiewich of Lyons, Colo. From her second marriage she is survived by four stepsons,a stepdaughter, seven step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.
