TARBORO — November 16, 1930 – November 3, 2012

Moody Hanes Ward, 81, passed away Saturday night at Wilson Medical Center.  Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Baptist Church, 202 Kincaid Avenue, Wilson with the Rev. Steve Strickland and the Rev. Tommy Sweeley will officiate. Burial with military honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, immediately following the service, at Grace Baptist Church.

Moody was born in Rocky Mount and graduated from Rocky Mount High School and East Carolina University. He spent his career in Tarboro as an executive with Carolina Telephone & Telegraph and Sprint, from which he retired. He also served as a captain of the National Guard company in Tarboro and retired from the Guard as a decorated Lieutenant Colonel.

Moody is survived by his wife, Mattie of Wilson; his children, Michael Ward and wife, Trish, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Joanne Ward Moffitt and husband, Walker, of Asheboro, N.C., Susan Ward Sweeley and husband, Tommy, of Southern Pines, N.C., and Garcy Ward and wife, Allison, of Washington, N.C.; his grandchildren, Laura Grace Rollins, Meredith Rollins, Lee Rollins, Bryan Moffitt, Joseph Ward, Samantha Ward and Camden Ward. He was expecting another grandchild any day. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles Ward of Rocky Mount and Larry Ward of Charlotte; his step-children, David Cobb of Kealakekua, Hawaii, and Susan Overman and Beth Kidwell, both of Aiken, SC; five step-grandchildren and a step-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Garcie Phillip Ward and Lula Mae Ward and his sister, Geraldine Ward Hunter.
