Princeville monthly meeting scheduled for Monday

TARBORO — PRINCEVILLE — The town's regularly scheduled meeting is set for 7 p.m. Monday at the town hall. Commissioner Ann Howell said Thursday evening that she had not receive an agenda and was not aware of matters that would be discussed.

The meeting will be the seventh meeting the town held since the Local Government Commission took over the town's finances due to the town's poor conditions.

Takeover evolved in LGC cutting Princeville's staff to a bare minimum leaving one administrative employe, Interim Town Manager Maggie Boyd. However, Boyd works only 15 hours per month to fulfill her obligations. LGC also allowed Edgecombe County to take over Princeville's water and sewer system. The take over mandated that citizens pay there water and sewer bills at the Edgecombe County Administration Building in Tarboro. With Boyd working minimum hours coupled with the county taking over the water system, Princeville town hall offices are rarely used.

Mayor Priscilla Everette-Oates and Commissioner Isabelle Purvis-Andrews has lobbied for more hours for Boyd to perform her duties. Commissioners Ann Howell and Gwen Knight are against it because they believe that Boyd is not qualified for the position. Commissioner Calvin Sherrod appears to be stuck in the middle. Shortly after LGC took over the town, Sherrod suggested that the town seek another person to fill the position. Since then, he have not made an open comment on the situation.

The five-panel board has had a rocky beginning since the inception of the board in 2009 when Everette-Oates, Purvis-Andrews and Sherrod were elected. The seating of the trio caused an instant division between them and their two fellow commissioners. The majority of their board meetings were filled with bickering and disputes .

Since LGC took over the town, there has been less squabbling amongst the board member. One of the squabbles included the LGC takeover. Initially, Everette-Oates,  Purvis-Andrews and Sherrod were against the takeover while Howell and Knight was for it. Recently, Sherrod has back tracked saying that he welcome the LGC to Princeville to improve the condition of the town.

Last month Sherrod asked for a public town meeting with the LGC. That meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Princeville Elementary School.
