Crash sends SWE students to hospital

TARBORO — A two-vehicle crash Friday morning involving two SouthWest Edgecombe High School students and the driver of a transport truck resulted in injuries for all three parties involved.

Jordan Tripp, 16, of Macclesfield, was traveling west on Davistown Mercer Road when he ran a stop sign and was hit by Timothy Rouse of LaGrange, who was driving a Pike Electric transport truck south on 111, according to Trooper S.D. Young. The transport truck, which was pulling a trailer of power poles, struck the pick-up on the passenger side, causing it to overturn.

Tripp and his passenger, Ethan Boggs, 16, of Macclesfield, were transported to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville with non-life-threatening injuries, said Young. She said both Boggs and Tripp were wearing seatbelts. Rouse suffered only minor injuries and was not transported to the hospital.

Tripp was charged with failure to yield at a stop sign.

SouthWest Principal Marc Whichard went to the scene of the accident to check on Boggs and Tripp before they were transported to be treated for facial lacerations.

“He did reassure the students everything was okay,” said Lauren Edmondson, communications and community relations director for Edgecombe County Public Schools. “If we have any sort of accident and the principal’s available, they usually try to go out and check on the students.”

“We have had a few accidents involving students over the years at Wiggins Crossroads,” Edmondson said. “It’s a scary intersection.”

Edmondson recalled the time she had an accident at that intersection in the winter of 2004 when she was a junior at SouthWest.

“I turned left on Davistown Mercer Road and flipped into the ditch in the snow,” she said. “It was very scary, but thankfully the school’s not far.”

The school principal at the time came to the scene to check on Edmondson, just as Whichard checked on his students Friday morning.
